For 2016, a few updates to the Sonata — such as the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto — have brought it to our attention again (compare the 2015 and 2016 models here). Hyundai is offering free Apple CarPlay and Android Auto upgrades for current customers. The software can be downloaded to a flash drive and uploaded to your 2015 Sonata with nav.

  • Hyundai currently offers Android Auto in the 2015 and 2016 model year Sonatas, but CarPlay support has been elusive. CarPlay allows a driver with an iPhone 5 or newer Apple smartphone to run apps.
  • Hyundai is releasing a software update that brings CarPlay support to eight new vehicles, including the 2016 Elantra GT, 2015 and 2016 non-hybrid Sonata, 2017 Santa Fe Sport, 2017 Santa Fe, 2015.
  • Most Hyundai vehicles 2017 and newer with Display Audio or Navigation arrive with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay installed. However, there are a select number of vehicles that do not have it installed. If you already have Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in your vehicle, then you do not need this update.

Installing the update for Apple CarPlay in your Hyundai is asimple and free process. Here’s how you do it:

  • First, make sure you have your car’s VINnumber, a USB stick from your car’s navigation, an iPhone, and a USB chargingcable.
  • Login to your account at myhyundai.com and you’ll see the free download option.
  • Once you select the download option, Hyundai’swebsite will guide you through each step of the process.

  • When asked if your car can connect to CarPlay, select connect.
